OptinPop trouble shooting guide

If you have any problems with OptinPop or OptinPop Advanced this trouble shooting guide should help…

The first thing you should do is to make sure you have uploaded the entire “optinpop” folder to your WordPress plugins folder. This folder contains some critical files that must be present otherwise popup windows will not appear on your blog.

1. Make sure the folder where you have optinpop.php installed is called “optinpop”.

2. Make sure you’re using version 2.0.2 or higher of the WordPress script. If you’re using an older version of WordPress be sure to upgrade it to the newest version.

Optin Pop is compatible with 2.02 up to 2.9.x.

3. Make sure you have the url to a website entered into the field for “URL of the page to show” if you don’t enter a URL in this box OptinPop will not work.

If no popup windows are showing on your blog go onto this next test…

4. Test OptinPop so that the popup windows appear every time on entry.

These are the settings fort this…

[Show on Load] Show to a visitor [always]

Then go to your blog, your popup window should then load every time you visit your blog.

This is to make sure it’s working.

If no popup windows are showing on your blog go onto this next test…

5. Check to make sure all the plugin files are in the correct locations on your web server?

Here are the relative paths to the folder that contains the files that power your popup window…

This is the folder you need to make sure you have installed along with all the files it contains…

/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox

Then you’ll need to have these files installed within the  “greybox” folder…

/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/about.html
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/AJS_fx.js
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/AJS.js
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/g_close.gif
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/gb_scripts.js
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/gb_styles.css
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/header_bg.gif
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/indicator.gif
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/LGPL.txt
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/loader_frame.html
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/next.gif
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/prev.gif
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/readme.txt
/wp-content/plugins/optinpop/greybox/w_close.gif

If you don’t have these files installed it can cause your popup windows not to work.

If no popup windows are showing on your blog go onto this next test…

6. Turn off other plugins so that the only active plugin is OptinPop.

If your popup windows begin working then it means that OptinPop conflicts with another plugin you have  installed.

The next thing to do is to turn on each plugin one at a time then go and test your blog to see if your popup window appears.

Do this for each plugin you activate until you find the plugin that causes a conflict with OptinPop and  prevents your popup windows from working.

When you do this make sure you have OptinPop set up to the parameters of test #2. This way you’ll have the popup window appearing each time you visit your blog.

7. Finally, if none of these work remove OptinPop from your web server by deactivating it from within the plugin area within WordPress admin. Then delete it from your web server.

Once you have all the OptinPop files removed  download fresh zip file containing OptinPop from this page here…

http://www.bigsellingoptins.com/blog/download-optinpop-wordpress-plug-in/

Then re-install OptinPop from the new zip file and configure OptinPop with a url and set it to show popup windows every time on load.

If none of these solutions work please let us know so that we can dig deeper into the cause and find a solution for you.

The pop up is very cool but and I’m using your html templates but I’m getting an error that the says the Post Method is not allowed.

When I look at the code on the form it says in every template. Should there be something in between those quotes after ‘action’?

  2. From admin

Hello Brecht, you need to add your own autoresponder code to the optin form template. This is something you need to do VERY carefully being sure to replace every piece of HTML form code with your own.

You do need to replace the special form code items with the code generated by your own autoresponder system including the form action.

If you don’t have an autoresponder system I highly recommend this one…

    Hi,
I likes the post very much. Very useful for me for future use.
I’m a new Blogger and at present I’ve a blogger blog only.
I’m searching for a good host so that I can experiment and have a wp blog too. I’ll be able to use this plug-in then.
Meanwhile, if I can useany other utility for my blogger blog, will you please tell me ?

    Hi,

I am just wondering where to install the templates or does that matter?
Does one just place them in the wp-content folder or directory?

    Thank you,
    Mike

Hello Mike, thanks for your message.

You can install your chosen optin form template anywhere you like, even on a different website.

I recommend creating a new folder then upload via FTP your chosen optin form template there. When you do this make sure you also copy the “images” folder to wherever you have your optin form hosted.

Be sure to edit your chosen template first by changing the text and adding your autoresponder code.

    I hope this helps.

Hello Shyamala, thanks for your message.

I recommend you use BlueHost.com for hosting your blog. They have a control panel that makes installing WordPress blogs very easy.

OptinPop and OptinPop Advanced only work on WordPress blogs.

As far as I know Blogger blogs don’t provide you with a way to extend it’s functions and features as WordPress does.

You’re much better off using WordPress than any other blogging platform.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,
So far so good. Up and running but I have it disabled at the moment as I don’t know where the names and email addresses actually go? Do you have a suggestion for database software.

  8. From admin

Hi Terry, thanks for your comment.

What you need to do is create a web page that includes an optin form. This page is then displayed within your popup window (you type in the url to this page within OptinPop). Here’s the download link to the optin page I’m using on this blog that’s featured within my own popup window.

    http://bigsellingoptins.com/download/popup.zip

Inside the zip file above you’ll get the images and the HTML file I created.

Once you’ve downloaded this template you’ll need to change the text and set up the optin form to your own autoresponder system (database software).

I highly recommend you use Aweber as your autoresponder system, I’ve used them for many years to help me build my lists. To find out more about them just go here…

Great Plugin but it appears to work on every page of my website – this seems like overkill and will annoy a visitor. The pages are all sub pages of the entry page – is there any way to stop this?

  12. From admin

Hello Colin, thanks for your message.

If you upgrade to OptinPop Advanced you can choose which types of pages you have your popup window appearing on…

    Hi.
This software looks very helpful indeed, but I’m experiencing a problem. I’ve uploaded and configured it, but the pop up does not appear.

When I checked with the troubleshooting page, I see that lots of files are supposed to be in the greybox folder. To begin, I see no greybox folder. There is a file called greybox, and it is empty. Please advise.

  14. From Kelwyn

    Hi again,
After several attempts, I’ve finally got things to work. Thanks a lot.

  15. From George

    Howdy.

Just now I’m testing 2 WP 2.8.4 blogs on different domen (hosting).
The first I’ve checked was Valuehost (valuehost.ru) with localized theme (ru) “PressBlue” ~neologics.ru/neoblog~. It doesn’t work any way (all mentioned above step were executed).

The second – placed on Hosgator is going OK immediately after installation.

So. I suppose it should be somehow related with a host features.
    Thanks arched for any advice.

  16. From admin

    Hello George,

    Thanks for your message.

If a web hosting company can provide you with a hosting account that can run WordPress there’s no reason why OptinPop should not work. The only exception is if there’s a conflict with another WordPress plugin you’re using. Conflicts can happen on very rare occasions due to a conflict of Javascript code.

    I hope this helps.

Just installed on hostgator wordpress, no problems, works just great.
